Brother Sewing Machine Company has a long history. It started in 1908 as the Yasui Sewing Machine Company. It was founded in Nagoya, Japan by Kanekichi Yasui. The name was changed a few years later to Yasui Brothers' Sewing Machine Company. This venture proved profitable and morphed in 1934 to Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Company. (My first sewing machine as a young girl was a Nippon… I loved that machine!).

Fast forward to 1954. This successful company became international and settled on the name of Brother International Corporation. With the move to exporting, the company expanded. It grew to include home appliances and knitting machines. In 1971, Brother, as we now know it, produced the first high-speed dot matrix computer printer.

Electric typewriters and other business related products became an important part of the company. All the while, however, Brother continued to produce their signature product: sewing machines. Some are sold under subsidiary companies such as Zhuhai Brother Industries Co., Xian Typical Brother Industries Co, and Brother Sewing Machine Xian Company among others.

Label printers, typewriters, machine tools, fax machines, and other computer products are all produced by Brother. Yet, this company has never forgotten its roots. They have continued non-stop into the 21st century producing the high quality the Brother Sewing Machine Company is known for!
