Students Sew Pillowcases for Cardiac Unit
Here’s a heartwarming story from Elma, Iowa, USA…
Students from Elma Elementary Charter School stitched over 20 pillowcases that will be donated to the pediatric cardio units at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Iowa Hospital. The young students, 4th-6th graders, were led by their teacher Denise Shekleton.
The community service project honors Aaron Eilerts. He was one of the Boy Scouts that lost their life in Camp Little Sioux tornado in June, 2008. Aaron was a young man dedicated to serving his family, friends, and community.
When this caring, wise Elma Elementary teacher received an e-mail from the Iowa Governor declaring February 24 as Aaron Eilerts Day of Service and Giving, she began planning a service project for her students. Being touched by congenital heart disease in a family member and also a friend, Shekleton chose the cardiac unit as the recipient of the students’ efforts.
It’s no surprise to me, having worked with elementary school aged children for years, that these students worked eagerly sewing pillowcases to help others. Some even chose to work through recess!
This is truly a win win situation. The pediatric cardio unit wins and the students win… by sharing both the joy of giving and the joy of sewing. For some, this brief introduction in sewing may very well lead to lifelong creative pursuit.
Congratulations Denise Shekleton and the young sewers from Elma Elementary Charter School!
