A story from the past...

Years ago, I became increasingly frustrated whenever I sat to sew. My 2-year old wonder machine was producing uneven stitches and the frequent bobbin problem was driving me insane! My relaxing hobby was becoming anything but enjoyable.

Meanwhile, my friend Rita, a bit older and much wiser than me, was happily creating beautifully stitched outfits for her little girls.

What was Rita's secret? An antique singer sewing machine!

I was in my early twenties at the time. To me, her tool of choice seemed ancient and outdated. Yet who was struggling? Not Rita!

While her old black contraption couldn’t produce a zigzag, the straight stitches were perfectly precise and evenly spaced. And her bobbin never spit back a jammed mess of thread to untangle! To top it off, Rita was quite relaxed. She was actually having fun working with her little old sewing machine.

It was many years later before I fell in love with and purchased my own antique Singer.

Built to Last

Vintage machinery was built exceptionally well, as evidenced by the vast number of these workhouses still in use. They are relivable and dependable... even with heavy and prolonged use.

The gears were made of metal as opposed to plastic, as is commonly found in modern models. Also, in general, these older tools require far less maintenance.

Above and beyond the actual mechanics, there is a special feeling when sewing on such a machine. A feeling that is hard to put into words.

When I sit at my Featherweight, I think of the women that might have sewn on it oh so many years ago. I bet they felt the same sense of joy and pride that connects all stitchers... that special feeling elicited when one transforms a simple piece of colorful fabric, and a tiny spool of thread, into a treasured article of beauty or utility.
